BEIJING June 4, 2026 (TON): Four New Zealand lawmakers are banned in China for their visit in Taiwan in May. The purpose of visit was to maintain and strengthen the relationship between Taiwan and New Zealand. 

In a statement released on Thursday Chinese embassy in Wellington said Strongly criticized the visit , saying lawmakers sent wrong signal to Taipei’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party.

A local news agency reported that email sent to New Zealand authorities said that the lawmakers “Laura McClure, David Wilson, Maureen Pugh and Duncan Webb” are banned from visiting China for a year. The travel ban will be reduced or lifted incase they apologize. However the lawmakers reportedly said, they will not apologize for visiting Taiwan.
