China Coast Guard Uses Water Cannons Against Philippine Ships

MANILA, 24 July 2026 (TON): Tensions in the South China Sea increased after the China Coast Guard used water cannons and carried out dangerous manoeuvres against Philippine vessels near Bajo de Masinloc during a maritime operation on Thursday.

Philippine Coast Guard spokesperson Rear Admiral Jay Tarriela strongly condemned China's actions, saying Bajo de Masinloc is part of Philippine territory and its surrounding waters fall within the country's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). He also said the 2016 Arbitral Award confirmed the area as a traditional fishing ground for Filipino fishermen.
