TAIPEI, June 18, 2026 (TON): Taiwan President Lai Ching-te claims that the island's efforts to strengthen its security and protect its democratic system should not be viewed as a provocation against China.
He said only the people of Taiwan have the right to determine the island's future and called on Beijing to engage in dialogue based on mutual respect and equality.
Lai also expressed hope that the United States would approve a new arms package for Taiwan in the near future. China has viewed this development negatively as China expects Taiwan not to create tension in the region.
Meanwhile, China rejected Lai's remarks, saying that Taiwan is an internal Chinese matter and reaffirming its claim over the self-governed island. Beijing has long opposed US arms sales to Taiwan as it would result in and increased military activities around the island.
