NEW DELHI, 15 July 2026 (TON): India and the Maldives have successfully concluded the first round of negotiations for a proposed Free Trade Agreement (FTA), held virtually from June 29 to July 7, 2026.

Negotiating teams from both countries conducted text-based discussions across eight technical sessions covering key policy areas aimed at strengthening bilateral trade and economic cooperation.

On July 8, India's Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal met Maldivian Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade Mohamed Saeed. Both leaders reviewed the progress of the negotiations and reaffirmed their commitment to advancing economic partnerships and moving the FTA process forward.
