NEW DELHI June 29, 2026 (TON): India has built the world's first facility that uses heat from a nuclear reactor to produce clean hydrogen fuel, marking a major step toward cleaner energy and lower carbon emissions.
The facility has been established at the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR) in Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu. The Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) developed this technology, which produces hydrogen through the Copper-Chlorine (Cu-Cl) thermochemical cycle using heat generated by the Fast Breeder Test Reactor (FBTR) instead of conventional electricity.
The technology is expected to support the production of low-carbon hydrogen, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and help industries adopt cleaner energy. It could also strengthen India's energy security while contributing to global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change.
