KATHMANDU, June 18, 2026 (TON): Saudi Arabia has temporarily suspended its newly introduced skills certification programme for Nepali migrant workers following widespread protests from recruitment agencies and workers.
The programme, launched in Nepal in April 2026, required workers seeking employment in Saudi Arabia to obtain a skills verification certificate before departure.
Recruitment agencies argued that the certification process increased costs and created delays for workers, making it more difficult for them to secure jobs.
In response, Saudi authorities decided to suspend the programme and hold further discussions with the Nepalese government and recruitment sector representatives.
Both countries are expected to continue consultations on labour migration reforms and measures aimed at improving worker protection.
