MANILA, 6 July 2026 (TON): The Philippine Senate officially opened the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte on Monday, marking the start of a high-profile political process amid her ongoing dispute with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
More than 6,000 police officers, including anti-riot units, were deployed around the Senate as supporters and opponents of Duterte gathered for demonstrations. Under the trial schedule, Duterte or her legal team may appear at the opening session, while the proceedings are expected to continue for about 92 days.
Duterte faces allegations including unexplained wealth and publicly threatening President Marcos. She has denied all accusations. If found guilty, she could be permanently barred from holding public office.
