COLOMBO, 11 July 2026 (TON): Sri Lanka's opposition has submitted a no-confidence motion against Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara, accusing the government of failing to protect inmates and prison personnel during the deadly clashes at Negombo Prison.

The motion follows violence that claimed the lives of 28 people, including eight prison officials. Opposition lawmakers argued that the government should be held accountable for the incident.

Meanwhile, the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka has opened an investigation into the prison violence to determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
