BANGKOK, 14 July 2026 (TON): The future of Asia and the Pacific will depend on whether young people have access to hope and opportunity, rather than population growth alone, according to UNFPA Asia-Pacific Regional Director Dr. Aleksandar (Sasha) Bodiroza.
Marking World Population Day, Dr. Bodiroza said governments are increasingly concerned about declining birth rates and ageing populations. However, he stressed that discussions often overlook the challenges young people face in education, employment and economic security.
He added that decisions about higher education, starting families and building careers are strongly influenced by available opportunities. Creating better prospects for youth, he said, is essential for the region's long-term development.
