CANBERRA, JULY 1, 2026 (TON): Australia's Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has filed a lawsuit against Amazon Australia, alleging that the company included unfair terms in its annual Prime subscription contracts between November 2023 and August 2025.
ACCC Chair Gina Cass-Gottlieb said the contracts allowed Amazon to make significant changes to its Prime Video service after customers had already paid for annual subscriptions. The regulator alleges that Amazon later made subscribers to pay an additional monthly fee to continue watching without ads.
The ACCC argues that the contract terms left consumers with little choice and may have breached Australian consumer law. The regulator is seeking financial penalties, consumer compensation, and other orders from the court.
Amazon Australia said it is reviewing the case and noted that it cooperated with the ACCC throughout the investigation.
