SUVA, 6 July 2026 (TON): Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka signed a new bilateral defence agreement in Fiji's capital, Suva, on Monday.
The two leaders also signed the Vuvale Union, an economic partnership under which Australia will invest more than 1 billion Australian dollars (US$693 million) in Fiji over the next decade.
Speaking after the signing ceremony, Albanese said the Ocean of Peace Alliance establishes a mutual defence commitment. "There is no higher obligation than to come to each other's aid in times of need," he said.
Rabuka said the agreement is built on three key pillars: deeper security cooperation, stronger economic integration, and enhanced people-to-people ties.
