MELBOURNE June 29, 2026 (TON): Australia and Vanuatu signed a security and economic agreement, named the Vanuatu–Australia Nakamal Agreement, on Monday.
The delayed agreement was signed in Canberra by Vanuatu Prime Minister Jotham Napat and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. This agreement was delayed because Vanuatu hesitated to sign the agreement, citing concerns that it could discourage foreign investment, and rejected an earlier draft.
According to a government statement, under the agreement Vanuatu will not allow any foreign military base or military infrastructure on its territory and will keep its critical infrastructure free from foreign interference.
