PHNOM PENH, June 19, 2026 (TON): Cambodia’s Supreme Court on Friday upheld the conviction of opposition politician Rong Chhun, a prominent adviser to the Nation Power Party.
Rong Chhun was convicted in 2025 on charges of incitement after meeting with villagers displaced by government-backed construction projects. Critics have described the case as part of broader efforts to limit opposition activity in the country.
Under the court's ruling, Rong Chhun is prohibited from participating in political activities for five years, including voting and running for public office. However, the court suspended the remainder of his sentence, allowing him to remain free and avoid imprisonment.
Following the verdict, Rong Chhun said he and his lawyer would review the court's decision and consider seeking a royal pardon from Cambodia's King Norodom Sihamoni.
