BOGOTÁ, June 22, 2026 (TON): Abelardo De La Espriella, a right-wing lawyer and political newcomer, secured a narrow victory in Colombia's presidential runoff election over left-wing Senator Iván Cepeda.

According to the National Registry's vote tally, De La Espriella received 49.7 percent of the vote, while Cepeda secured 48.7 percent, trailing by approximately 250,000 votes.

The outcome signals a significant political shift in Colombia following the country's first left-wing administration. De La Espriella is scheduled to take office on August 7, 2026, and is expected to face challenges including political polarization, security concerns, and the need to build support within Congress to advance his agenda.
