PARIS, 16 July 2026 (TON): France's National Assembly has given final approval to a bill that would allow adults with incurable illnesses to receive assisted dying medication after years of national debate on end-of-life care.
The bill was approved by a vote of 291 to 241 in the lower house of Parliament. However, it must still undergo a constitutional review before it can officially become law. President Emmanuel Macron first proposed the legislation more than three years ago.
If implemented, France will join several countries where assisted dying is permitted under specific legal conditions. The proposal comes as the country faces an aging population and increasing demand for long-term care for patients with chronic illnesses.
