Pentagon Restores US Pacific Command Name After Dropping 'Indo'

WASHINGTON, D.C., June 18, 2026 (TON): The United States Department of Defense has officially changed the name of the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command (USINDOPACOM) back to the U.S. Pacific Command (USPACOM).

According to the Pentagon, the move is intended to restore the command's historic identity, which had been used for more than 70 years before it was renamed. The command was renamed the in 2018 to reflect growing strategic importance of the Indian Ocean region and Washington’s engagement in Asia.

Pentagon officials said the name change will not affect the command's mission, responsibilities, partnerships, or geographical area of operations. They added that its commitment to maintaining regional security and cooperation with allies and partners will remain unchanged.
