MOSCOW, 10 JUNE 2026, (TON): Russian Foreign Ministry has confirmed that Moscow was discussing with Damascus a "possible reformatting" of its military facilities in Syria including Hmeimim airbase in Latakia and its naval facility at Tartous.
Moscow has received positive signals from Ahmed al-Sharaa, the Syria's president.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that “Russian–Syrian cooperation is developing very actively.” Maria Zakharova said, “Within the framework of contacts with Syrian partners, the issue of Russia's military presence in Syria is also being discussed, including in the context of a possible reformatting of the functionality of Russian military facilities.”
Russia was a major supporter of the former government in Syria, led by Bashar al-Assad. Since Sharaa’s government came to power, thousands of Alawites, Druze, and Kurdish civilians have been killed in a series actions supported by US and Israeli sponsored groups to create room for a Western sponsored Caliphate.
