LONDON June 22, 2026 (TON): British Prime Minister and Labour Party leader Keir Starmer announced his resignation following growing pressure from members of his party.

The recent electoral success of Andy Burnham increased calls within Labour for a change in leadership. The party is expected to begin the process of selecting a new leader in the coming weeks, with Burnham widely viewed as a leading contender.

Starmer said he will remain in office until his successor is chosen. With his departure, he becomes the seventh British prime minister to leave office in the past decade.

The issue arose after the resignation of former SLC President Shammi Silva and the appointment of an interim management committee by the Sports Ministry. The ICC has reiterated its policy that national cricket boards must operate independently and remain free from political interference.
