Trump Announces New Tariffs on Canadian Goods

WASHINGTON D.C , 21 July 2026 (TON): US President Donald Trump has announced new tariffs of up to 50 percent on nearly $20 billion worth of Canadian imports. The new duties will take effect on August 19 and cover products including wine, cement, dairy items, furniture, clothing and sports equipment.

The Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) said the affected goods represent about 5.2 percent of total US imports from Canada in 2025. The move was made under Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, which allows retaliatory trade measures.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said his government has submitted proposals to resolve trade disputes with Washington and remains open to negotiations. Major exports such as energy, potash, fish and critical minerals have been excluded from the tariffs.
