UN Human Rights Chief Reappointed for Second Term

NEW YORK, 25 July 2026 (TON): The UN General Assembly has reappointed Volker Türk as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights for a second four year term despite opposition from the United States, Israel, and Russia.Türk secured 144 votes in the 193-member assembly, while proposals from the US and Russia to delay or shorten his term were rejected. 

Several countries criticized or supported the decision during the vote. The European Union backed Türk, saying he had performed his duties with fairness and integrity, while the US and Russia raised concerns over the appointment process and alleged political bias.
