CARACUS, 26 June 2026 (TON): A series of powerful earthquakes that struck Venezuela has left at least 190 people dead and 980 injured, according to rescue operations chief.
Acting president Delcy Rodríguez has announced a state of emergency across severely affected regions.
The twin quakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, hit near the northern coastal region and triggered widespread destruction, including the collapse of multiple buildings in and around Caracas and La Guaira.
Authorities said it was extremely difficult to carryout rescue operations entire as for the emergency teams it was impossible to remove the rubble in search search for survivors. Hospitals in the capital and nearby states are jam packed from injured persons while more injured continue to arrive.
The government has deployed military and disaster response units to accelerate rescue and relief operations. Infrastructure damage has also disrupted transport, power supply, and communication networks in several areas, especially Caracas and La Guaira.
International assistance has started reaching including search-and-rescue, medical aid, and logistical assistance and recovery efforts.
