Zimbabwe’s Proposed End to Direct Presidential Elections

HARARE, June 19, 2026 (TON): Zimbabwe’s parliament has approved a controversial constitutional amendment bill that would end direct presidential election.The proposal has sparked debate about Zimbabwe’s democratic future.

The proposal also increases presidential terms from five to seven years, elections that are due in 2028 would postponed until 2030.

If the amendment becomes law, President Emmerson Mnangagwa could potentially remain in office for a longer period. The ruling ZANU-PF party supports the bill and claims it will improve the governance and political stability meanwhile the opposition say it will weaken the democracy.
